Constitutional Concerns

Pain ManagementConstitutional Concerns such as Weight Management, Autoimmune Disease, Fibromyalgia, and Detoxification:

Weight Management: Weight gain can be the result of any number of factors: inappropriate diet, lack of exercise, hormone imbalance particularly around menopause, toxicity, underactive thyroid, food sensitivities, insulin dysregulation and other factors that undermine the metabolism. Dr. Maura targets the cause of a patient’s weight gain and tailors a program to specifically address these imbalances using personalized nutrition programs, exercise recommendations, botanical formulations to balance hormones, vitamin and mineral supplements to optimize insulin regulation, detoxification measures and diagnostics to evaluate metabolic disturbances such as metals toxicity and gut imbalance.

Autoimmune Disease: When the body’s immune system malfunctions and turns on itself, attacking healthy tissue. There are thought to be both genetic and environmental components. Examples include: type 1 diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis, lupus, fibromyalgia, inflammatory bowel disease, psoriasis, and Hashimoto’s thyroiditis. Conventional medical treatment focuses on the management of pain and inflammation through the use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatories (NSAIDS) such as ibuprofen and steroids such as prednisone. And while these are sometimes necessary for managing symptoms, naturopathic medicine tries to uncover the upstream cause of autoimmune disease. Whether it’s diet, lifestyle, toxic environmental exposure, physical and emotional stress, gut imbalance, etc., Dr. Maura will uncover the root of the problem and address starting with anti-inflammatory diets, balancing gut health, eliminating toxic exposures, improving detoxification and improving nutrient status through supplementation.

Fibromyalgia: A disorder than primarily affects women, symptoms of fibromyalgia include: crushing fatigue; joint pain particularly in the arms, legs and lower back; tingling in the extremities; depression and anxiety; and sleep disturbances. Fibroyalgia is a diagnosis of exclusion, meaning there is no way to definitively diagnose fibromyalgia. Dr. Maura has success treating this syndrome with a combination of approaches: supporting the adrenals, improving gut health, removing toxins, correcting hormone imbalance, improving sleep and optimizing diet.

Detoxification: Everyone carries a burden of toxins to some extent, it is a byproduct of modern life: a food supply that is genetically modified and treated with pesticides, environmental pollutants, prescription drugs, and stress are just some of the things that raise the body’s toxicity. When toxic load becomes problematic, a person becomes symptomatic: headaches, brain fog, depression, fatigue, sleep disturbances, allergies, constipation, diarrhea, abdominal gas and bloating, acne, rash, halitosis, excessive body odor, and memory loss are some of the markers. Dr. Maura recommends a twice-yearly cleanse but also includes detoxification in a number of her treatment protocols, after determining the cause of toxicity. She utilizes targeted multi-day purification programs, biotherapeutic drainage, and gastrointestinal cleansing. Juicing, saunas, colon hydrotherapy are often components of her detox programs.
