Why I became a naturopathic doctor:
I always wanted to be a doctor, first a pediatrician and then an obstetrician by age 12. In high school I learned about midwifery, and I decided I would still go to medical school but learn how to practice like a midwife. My plan was to to start practice with my friend who wanted to be a midwife. Around the same time I made the choice to use natural-based products for personal care and cosmetics as well as look to nutritional supplements, herbs, and homeopathic remedies for health concerns.
My three passions have always fallen between health/medicine, education, and cultural awareness & understanding. As I learned more about myself and my health challenges over the years, I sought natural approaches, especially when I felt the conventional approach didn’t work for me. Even though I was still on track for med school through undergrad at Stanford, life veered in another direction, and I entered the field of community-based work. I enjoyed my direct interactions with clients and empowering them with tools and resources to improve their lives, but I didn’t feel “at home” in the fields in which I was working. I learned about naturopathic medicine, had an epiphany, and immediately set sights on naturopathic medical school. I realized that naturopathic medicine would allow me to combine all of my passions and help people to restore balance within themselves and reach a level of sustained wellness while also embracing their diverse cultural and individual backgrounds. As a naturopathic doctor, I endeavor to serve as a vehicle for change by partnering with people to achieve a state of well-being at all levels of mind-body-spirit through their innate natural healing process.
